France Rénov': the state's free renovation advice and grant portal

What is France Rénov'?

France Rénov' is the French state's public service for home renovation, run by ANAH (the national housing agency). It has two sides: free advice from local advisers, and a website, france-renov.gouv.fr, where you apply for MaPrimeRénov', the main state grant. It doesn't sell or carry out any work.

What does a France Rénov' adviser do, and what does it cost?

The advice is free, neutral and independent. An adviser can tell you which work to do first, which grants fit your house and how to find qualified firms. They don't earn anything from the work you choose, so it's a sensible first call before you ask any firm for a quote. Have the house's address and age to hand: the adviser needs both to say which grants apply.

The advisers sit in the Espaces Conseil France Rénov' (local advice centres), around 600 across France. The website has a search for the nearest one. There's also a national phone line, 0 808 800 700. The service is free, and you pay only the cost of the call.

How do you apply for MaPrimeRénov' on france-renov.gouv.fr?

Since 17 August 2026 this website is the single place to apply for MaPrimeRénov', and for MaPrimeAdapt' (the grant for adapting a home to age or disability). You create one account, and it's checked through FranceConnect+, a stronger version of FranceConnect (the state's shared online login). La Poste's digital identity is one way to get it. The older maprimerenov.gouv.fr address still redirects to the new site.

FranceConnect+ takes longer to arrange from abroad. If you live outside France, set it up before you have a devis (written quote) in hand, because the application can't be filed without it.

France Rénov' or Mon Accompagnateur Rénov': which one do you need?

They're easy to mix up, and they're different. The France Rénov' adviser gives free first advice. Mon Accompagnateur Rénov' (MAR, "my renovation guide") is a paid, state-approved adviser who stays with the project, and you must use one for a rénovation d'ampleur (the whole-house grant route). MaPrimeRénov' pays part of the MAR's fee.

The two can overlap: an Espace Conseil France Rénov' can itself be approved as a MAR. Since 24 February 2026 you also need a France Rénov' appointment before a rénovation d'ampleur, so for that route you'll meet them first anyway.

Can second-home owners use France Rénov'?

MaPrimeRénov' is for a principal residence only, so a holiday home doesn't qualify. For a second home the useful questions are different: CEE (energy-supplier grants, paid whether the house is your main home or not) and whether the work qualifies for reduced TVA (French VAT).

When you book an appointment, say up front whether it's your main home. It changes which grants the adviser will talk about.

Where does France Rénov' list RGE-approved firms?

The same website hosts the official directory of firms with RGE status (the state's approved-installer label), at france-renov.gouv.fr/annuaire-rge. Where a grant depends on RGE, the simplest step is to ask each firm to print its RGE number on the devis (written quote); the directory confirms it in a minute, should you want to.

Is that call really from France Rénov'?

Companies that phone or email in France Rénov's name are not France Rénov'. This is a well-known scam pattern. The real service doesn't phone you to sell work, and it never sells work at all. If a caller offers a "free assessment" or says you've been selected for a grant, hang up and book through the official website yourself. Never give a bank card number or a copy of your tax notice to someone who rang you.
